Blood Tests

Appointments for blood tests may be made at the surgery.

Please see our current schedule when we able to offer blood tests:

Tuesday 12.00 – 15.00

Thursday 12.00 – 15.00
Friday 08:30 – 11:30

If you are required to have a fasting blood test (usually for cholesterol or glucose tests) please advise reception so they can give you an early morning appointment.

For a fasting blood test please refrain from eating or drinking anything other than water from midnight the night before the test.

Cervical Smears

We encourage all women to have a cervical smear: for women between 25-50 this should be every three years and for women between 50-65 every five years (or more frequently if indicated). This can be done here at the surgery, by the practice nurse or if appropriate by a doctor.

Child Health Checks

Child development examinations – all children are seen at 6 weeks for a child development exam. These can be pre booked. Please bring the red child development book.

Immunisations – the practice nurse will give childhood immunisations by appointment in normal surgery hours.

Health Visitors – the health visitors run well baby clinics and clinic for the under fives, details are available from the Health Visitors Team on 01273 267598.

Talking Therapies and Emotional Wellbeing Support

You have access to these services though the surgery. Please discuss this with your doctor or you can self refer via www.brightonandhovewellbeing.org.

Immunisations

Adult and travel immunisations are performed by the practice nurses by appointment only. If you are intending to go abroad please review our travel section and if immunisations or malaria prophylaxis are required then complete a travel form. We advise you to make an appointment to see the nurse two to three months before you travel to discuss what you need. We stock most travel vaccinations and will give you all the necessary information. Some vaccinations are subject to a fee, please view our charges for private vaccinations and immunisations.

Routine childhood immunisations and other NHS provided immunisations are provided by appointment with the practice nurse.

District Nurses

The Integrated Primary Care Team (District Nurses) are available 08.00 – 16.00 Monday to Friday on 01273 545290.

Out of hours please ring the 111 service.

Emergency Contraception

Emergency contraception is available at the surgery. Leaflets are available outside the nurses’ treatment room. Please contact the receptionist and ask for an urgent appointment (can be a telephone appointment) with either the nurse or doctor, indicating the reason for your request.

This can also be purchased over the counter at many pharmacies.

Family Planning

Advice and counselling on a range of methods of contraception are provided by both the doctors and nurses. Please make an appointment.

We fit coils at this practice. Please make an appointment with Dr Brown for an initial review and discussion of the procedure. When booking please advise reception of the reason.

Health Checks

As part of our Practice’s commitment to the promotion of health and the prevention of illness we are offering health checks to people aged between 40 – 74. You can book a health check by contacting reception. We are also actively inviting patients and encourage you to take up this offer.

Maternity Care

Antenatal clinics are held at the Children’s Centre, Brentwood Road, Hollingdean, Brighton.
Please register via www.mypregnancymatters.co.uk. They can be contacted on 01273 295623. A Community Midwife will look after you throughout your pregnancy and after discharge from hospital, giving continuity of care.

Please complete our Maternity Care form so we can update our records and view helpful advice about vitamins, vaccinations and diet.

Minor Operations

We perform a small range of minor surgical procedures (e.g. mole and cyst removal), here at the practice. Any operations have to be for clinical reasons and cannot be only for cosmetic grounds.

Please discuss with your doctor any lesions that concern you.

Prevention Care

Cervical smears, blood pressure monitoring, urine testing and blood tests are conducted by the practice nurse during surgery hours.

Cryotherapy

We offer cryotherapy (liquid nitrogen freezing therapy) for lesions that are considered suitable by your doctor or nurse.

Preventative Care

Cervical smears, blood pressure monitoring, urine testing and blood tests are done by the practice nurse or health care assistant during surgery hours.

Smoking Cessation

If you smoke and wish to stop please contact the surgery to make an appointment with our Smoking Cessation Advisor. They can offer support and recommend suitable smoking cessation therapy (e.g. patches, tablets, gum) to help you quit. This can be prescribed by the surgery

Alternatively a doctor or nurse practitioner can provide nicotine replacement therapy or other medication to help you stop. Please ask for an appointment with your Doctor or nurse practitioner.

X-Ray’s

You can have your x-ray at Hove Polyclinic, Princess Royal or Lewes Victoria Hospitals (via a walk-in system – no appointment required) or at the Royal Sussex County Hospital (by appointment only).
